Tredwell receives Test call up

Kent captain James Tredwell has been given a chance to impress for the Test side after having been called up by England.

The 30 year old off spinner was named in England’s T20 and One Day International squads to tour India just before Christmas and in the New Year on Wednesday afternoon.

Now the new Kent skipper will board a plane to Kolkata on Friday and will come into contention for the Third Test as cover for both Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar.

Tredwell was set to join up with the Performance Squad in Pune on Wednesday of next week, but he will now press for a place in the Test side with England considering their options ahead of the Third Test with the series finely poised at one game apiece.

“Tredwell has performed really well for us,” said England coach Andy Flower. “He can make a real impact as a spin bowler.”

“He is arriving in Kolkata on December 1 as cover. We have some spinners with the Performance Programme. But Tredwell is a senior spinner and will stay with us for the Tests.”

The third Test takes place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata from December 5-9.

The Kent spinner has played in just the one Test for England so far, making his debut against Bangladesh in March 2010, taking 2 for 99 and 4 for 82 in the game England comfortably won by nine wickets.
